Not more than five minutes after the electricity went out, the backup generator kicked in. Rather than reconnect with Miles and clean the mess made by Mother Nature’s aggressive tone, Ruby checked on his loved ones, except for Sherry, followed by his housekeepers. His sight validated that all were well and without knowledge of the disturbance. Covered by a baseball hat and hooded sweater he hadn’t worn in years, he passed his bedroom door and slid a folded piece of paper with the words I’m sorry under the door.

In a car that he had barely driven, Ruby was sure that if he inhaled deep enough, he’d smell that new car smell everyone raved about. He took in the pounding and crushing sounds his tires encountered on the road and didn’t wince over the light raindrops the open window spit at his face. The storm’s downgrade from savage to merciful helped Ruby’s thoughts fall into place.

The distant ride out to the farm reminded Ruby of its purchase and renovation. Flashes of the land’s rebirth, along with the consistent hopes for it to never be inhabited, settled in front of Ruby’s vision. His hands took over and guided the steering wheel to his destination. The action allowed Ruby’s mind to take flight and relive the past.

The black fence separated and protected miles of rich green land. Although once shabby and broken, it was what had pushed Ruby to buy. Its strength, regardless of its age and weathering, allowed it to survive so much. Its longevity and will to stand firm was what reassured Ruby. He drove along the fence that led him back in time to when Ruby officially became a part of the music world and a brother in blue.
